Collaboration
By Kellie Powell

WRITTEN: 2003.

SUMMARY: Kim, a young poet and playwright, had written a play-in-one-scene called JSTMYN. Her friend, Shane, had adapted the play into a full-length show, and approached her about authorizing a production of the new version. They have arranged a meeting in a neighborhood park. Shane is planning to celebrate the signing of their first contract, and is shocked when Kim refuses to allowing Shane's "bastardization" of her work to be published or produced. A dispute over intellectual creative property erupts. The battle rages until Kim eventually reveals the true reason why the play means so much to her: Shane was the inspiration for the love story he destroyed. Ultimately, their collaboration on JSTMYN mirrors their uneven relationship.

KIM:
You said you wanted to collaborate with me. And I thought about it, and I said, "Okay. Go ahead. Experiment and send me whatever you come up with." I didn't say, "Make it say completely the opposite of what I was trying to say."

SHANE:
What were you trying to say? I mean, I liked the concept, but the story didn't really, y'know, go anywhere. So, whatever you were trying to say, it was lost on me.

KIM
Thanks, you've made that perfectly clear. But just because you didn't get the message doesn't mean it wasn't there.

SHANE:
If you didn't want me to change anything, you should have said that you were, I don't know, attached to it.

KIM:
I wrote it! That I was attached to it should go without saying!

SHANE:
I wish it hadn't. Because now I'm fucked! This isn't fair!

KIM:
Love and war.

SHANE:
Ha ha. Which is this?

KIM:
Ha ha.
