Heartland's Rejects: A Collection of Ten Minute Plays
By Kellie Powell

WRITTEN: 2002-2007.

COLLECTION: Six plays for $10. Heartland Theatre Company, a community group in Bloomington- Normal, Illinois, has an annual ten-minute play competition. The first year's theme was "Porch Plays" - all submissions had to take place on a porch. The second year was "Parlour Plays" - all plays that occurred in funeral parlours. Next came "Classroom Plays" and after that came "Attic Plays." None of Kellie Powell's submissions were accepted into the festival. In 2007, the theme was "One Shoe" and Kellie Powell's submission was a finalist, but not ultimately among the winning selections.

JAYNA
This is your last chance to say goodbye to your father.

DREW
I said goodbye five years ago. And good riddance.

JAYNA
You can't be mad at him now that he's gone.

DREW
Are you sure about that?

JAYNA
Your father was a good man, Drew. He was charming, and generous-

DREW
Yeah, until you get to know him.

JAYNA
I knew him. Drew, you're not being fair.

DREW
Fair? Don't you talk to me about fair.

JAYNA
I know there were some dark times-

DREW
You don't know the half of it.

JAYNA
You haven't stopped to think about all the good things your father did for you. If he were here right now, he would tell you how much he loved you. He would tell you all the wonderful things he remembers about you when you were growing up.

DREW
God! What do you know? You weren't there! You don't know what it was like! You have no idea what you're talking about!

JAYNA
I know a lot more than you think. I know he put everything he had into giving you a better life than he had. Your parents weren't meant for each other, and they had a messy divorce. But it takes two people to fight, Drew.

DREW
It only takes one person to break a door down.
