The Fall of the House of Usher
By Gippe Hoppe
Based on the Story by Edgar Allan PoeRoderick, a young man who has hardly left his house for years. He has vivid hallucinations, among other problems. He has invited his only friend in the world, Ed, to his house, who he has not seen in years. This is taken from an early scene.
RODERICK:
Only the blandest food is tolerable...light hurts my eyes...my clothes must be of a certain texture or they cause me pain...only music is pleasant to my ears. Even the odor of flowers is oppressive. Sleep never lasts more than a couple of hours...then I'm wide awake. I wander the house for hours at a time. I find myself in a particular room, only to forget why I'm there. The different between day and night is not always evident to me. Time means nothing. There are clocks, but they just spin around to no particular purpose. Look at my face. Look. My skin seems to be giving away to something else...like there is something else inside me that's trying to press through...
(Beat.) Listen to me. I'm sorry, Ed. I'm not being a very good host. Subjecting my guest to such nonsense! You talk now, Ed. I want you to tell me about yourself. Do you have a good life?
