CONCUSSIONED!
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 @ 6:12 PM
Yesterday Amanda and I had our useless group therapy. So we took the bus to the Dept. of Social Services as we usually do. But then I slipped on some ice and fell backwards. I fell on my back and got the wind knocked out of me and I hit the back of my head. I got sort of disoriented, but I figured it was nothing serious. Then as we were walking up the hill and checking in, the pain got worse. Amanda asked someone for an ice pack and then all hell broke loose. They were like, "She hit her head? Where? On our property? Oh no!!!"
Some woman made me sign an incident report, and they gave me an ice pack, and I said I wanted to go to therapy, see how I was feeling when we got done, and then evaluate whether or not I needed some kind of medical attention. I thought they were making a pretty big deal out of nothing. But then I started to feel really nauseated, and I started to have a hard time concentrating and I really, really wanted to go to sleep. At that point the group leader, Denise, started to get worried and badgered Amanda into taking me to the ER.
Amanda's feeling was, "I'm pretty sure you have a mild concussion, but there's a slight chance that it could be more serious and you might have done some real damage." I was feeling strangely compliant, and maybe a little worried, and definitely out of it, so I went along with the whole thing. When I called my mom, she said, "Well, don't worry about how you're going to pay for it, because you fell on county property and it's really their problem, not yours." Denise or someone called an ambulance and they took me to the hospital. We waited for about three hours in a dirty room. Finally someone did a CAT scan. I didn't break anything or appear to be bleeding into my brain, so they let me go home. It was a really stupid experience. I don't know what I was thinking. I never seek medical attention unless I'm in the worst pain of my life. I must have been concussed to deviate from my policy.
