CONCUSSIONED!

Wednesday, February 20, 2008 @ 6:12 PM

Yesterday Amanda and I had our useless group therapy. So we took the bus to the Dept. of Social Services as we usually do. But then I slipped on some ice and fell backwards. I fell on my back and got the wind knocked out of me and I hit the back of my head. I got sort of disoriented, but I figured it was nothing serious. Then as we were walking up the hill and checking in, the pain got worse. Amanda asked someone for an ice pack and then all hell broke loose. They were like, "She hit her head? Where? On our property? Oh no!!!"

Some woman made me sign an incident report, and they gave me an ice pack, and I said I wanted to go to therapy, see how I was feeling when we got done, and then evaluate whether or not I needed some kind of medical attention. I thought they were making a pretty big deal out of nothing. But then I started to feel really nauseated, and I started to have a hard time concentrating and I really, really wanted to go to sleep. At that point the group leader, Denise, started to get worried and badgered Amanda into taking me to the ER.

Amanda's feeling was, "I'm pretty sure you have a mild concussion, but there's a slight chance that it could be more serious and you might have done some real damage." I was feeling strangely compliant, and maybe a little worried, and definitely out of it, so I went along with the whole thing. When I called my mom, she said, "Well, don't worry about how you're going to pay for it, because you fell on county property and it's really their problem, not yours." Denise or someone called an ambulance and they took me to the hospital. We waited for about three hours in a dirty room. Finally someone did a CAT scan. I didn't break anything or appear to be bleeding into my brain, so they let me go home. It was a really stupid experience. I don't know what I was thinking. I never seek medical attention unless I'm in the worst pain of my life. I must have been concussed to deviate from my policy.

obligatory "I-haven't-posted-in-a-long-time" post

Monday, February 18, 2008 @ 4:29 PM

I got an e-mail last night from Chelsea. That was exciting. Not much else has been happening. Amanda and Rich and I watched Stir of Echoes and Cat's Eye for Valentine's Day. And the Teen Girl Squad "Valentimes" episode, which is awesome. Our cat has been kind of weird lately. Maybe she senses gnomes in the walls.

Short Poems

Tuesday, February 12, 2008 @ 12:02 AM

I got an e-mail today from the folks at Getting REaD letting me know that my submissions have been posted. I didn't win any prizes, and there's not even an author bio, but you can rate my group of short poems and leave comments if you'd like.

Transportation in Liberty

Saturday, February 09, 2008 @ 4:36 PM

My great-aunt Sherry sent me a really great e-mail forward about how Citgo has been taken over by Russians and Iranians and is changing its name to "Petrol Express" or something, and how if you're a good American, you should not buy gasoline there. Is it wrong that my reaction to this was, "Aw, how cute?" Is that an overly cynical reaction?

Pretty much irrelevant for me, since I do not buy gasoline, ever, from any gas station, whether it is owned by the British, the Iranians, or the Swedish. I am an avid pedestrian, even in an area that I think was designed to discourage all residents from walking even a single block. I've got ice on sidewalks, mountains of snow on the curbs, traffic circles, areas where there is no sidewalk, missing cross-walks, blind corners, and miles of woodland highway between parts of what is supposed to be ONE CITY. No public transportation, the private transportation (Short Line Coach bus system) has illogical and incredibly inconvenient schedules, and unreliable and sometimes very shady drivers. I'm convinced that the bus line owner is in cahoots with the taxi service, something like - Sureway Taxi pays half its profits to Short Line Bus in exchange for the bus company running itself out of business and forcing consumers to patronize the taxi service at ten times the cost.

"Who are we exploiting today?"
"Um... The workers, I think."
"Eeeexcellent."

CAFFEEEEEEEINE!

Thursday, February 07, 2008 @ 6:19 AM

I have had so much caffeine I think my molecules are coming loose. I was in the dollar store yesterday and the manager happened to see me and said, "Hey, you're the one I'm supposed to send for a drug test." So she gave me the paperwork and now I have 48 hours to get to Middletown and prove I'm not a pothead. I hate drug tests, they always make me feel like a criminal. My bus to Middletown is at 9:30. It'll take me an hour and a half to get there. From the bus stop, I may have to take a cab to the actual testing center, which will annoy me.

This is pretty much how I feel right now. See also: That one episode of Futurama, and the David Sedaris story where he does a lot of cocaine.

What a difference the Bears make...

Monday, February 04, 2008 @ 10:15 PM

Superbowl 2007 - Chicago Bears vs. Indianapolis Colts
Spent in the mental ward of Swedish Covenant Hospital, Chicago. Screamed at the TV whenever the Colts scored, felt like crying after the game.

Superbowl 2008 - Giants vs. Patriots
Spent in the guest room of Sheila's house, playing Legend of Zelda, periodically going down to the basement to steal veggie pizza from Sheila's Super Bowl Party.

G-v- M- M- M-n-- B-ck, --- B-tch!

I can't get ahold of Amanda, I don't know when she's coming home. I'm planning to take the 7pm bus to Binghamton tonight to visit my mom (and ask her to buy me Taco Bell. And do some laundry). I'll probably stay until sometime Monday - since I don't have to work on Mondays anymore.

Before I go, I'm going to trek all the way out to Mary's in the hopes that she is home and has some money for me. Ordinarily, I would call first, but she doesn't have a phone. I'm just going to show up and sit on her doorstep until she gets home. And if I miss my bus, so be it. I'll take the one at 10am tomorrow morning, if I can drag myself out of bed that early. If I can't, then I will just have to forgo my Binghamton visit and spend the rest of my weekend with my cat and my TV. Well, I've had worse weekends.

Tr-ck Q--st---ns

Friday, February 01, 2008 @ 12:37 PM

I went to Family Dollar today to take an honesty survey. If I answered the questions right, I might get to take a drug test. Assuming I pass the drug test, I might get to work at Family Dollar! (Now I can die happy!) It's part-time, which I'm hoping is actually part-time for once (since usually when I sign up to work part-time I end up working 40 hours a week or more). I never thought I could be so excited about the possibility of making minimum wage...

Sample question from today's ethics survey:

Q: Most teenagers shoplift. If you have ever shoplifted, why did you do it?

A. To fit in.
B. I needed the item I stole.
C. To experience the thrill of breaking the law.
D. I have never stolen anything.

The thing I like about those honesty surveys is that to answer correctly, you are pretty much required to lie.
